# Wine room design ideas that respect the building

Choose a layout from the collection, room conditions and service needs.

Choose the storage purpose before the finishes. An enclosed room for ageing wine has different demands from an open rack used for display. Keep the serving area outside the controlled room when that helps limit door traffic.

## A quiet enclosed room

An interior room with limited glazing can make the enclosure easier to detail. Plan wall insulation, vapour control, sealed doors and lighting with the designer. ## A glass wine wall

A wine wall can show the collection from a dining room. Ask the designer to calculate the heat passing through the proposed glass. Review frames, doors and joints as part of the whole enclosure. Keep direct sunlight and strong heat sources in the brief. Do not choose a cooling unit from the room volume alone.

## A cabinet within joinery

A cabinet can provide a separate controlled space without converting the whole room. Check the exact model's ventilation and clearance instructions. Allow a route to remove it for service. Do not assume every freestanding cabinet can be built in.

## Racks that fit the collection

Make a list of bottle shapes, cases and display bottles. Ask for a capacity schedule that separates ordinary slots from bulk storage and display positions. A rendering may hide inaccessible spaces. Mark door swings, handles, ladders and service panels on the plan.

Use a physical sample of the proposed rack with your bottles before fabrication. Keep lighting and control access reachable.
